CORNWALL MOVES UP IN STANDINGS WITH WIN MONCTON, NB
- February 7, 2010 -
Two teams in the NB-PEI Major Midget Hockey League
played just one game this weekend and it wasn’t until the final minutes
of the game that both seemed to realize there was a game on and someone
had to win. Then the scoring broke out and in under two minutes the
game was decided, the Cornwall Thunder got a pair of goals. Their
opponents, the Moncton Flyers managed just one.
Not that
there weren’t isolated oppotunities before that point, it just seemed
the two goaltenders were ready to play for the win, their opponents
just weren’t ready to score.
The game was fast paced
from the opening whistle but passing was off, there was little hitting
and much of the play consisted of long passes and shooting that went
over and beside the net if it didn’t end up on their opponents sticks.
But the last two minutes were exciting as Brandon Carter intercepted a
pass and threw it ahead to Isaac Jay who got it to the stick of Devan
Gunn in full flight. He deked Flyer’s goaltender Brandon Thibeau and
drove it low under the glove and into the corner of the net to finally
put a marker on the scoreboard.
Then just 36 seconds
later the Thunder drove hard to the net again with Brandon Carter
and Isaac Jay both attempting to get the puck in for a score before
Stefan Lapierre caught the rebound and drove it home and the Thunder
were up by two.
That seemed to wake up the Flyers who mounted
a spirited attack and finally got a goal of their own by Alexandre
LeBlanc from Nick Smith and Zack Cahill. But with just 30 seconds left
in the game that was all they could do as they dropped their third in a
row.
Shots in the game were pretty even with both Thunder’s
Dylan McQuaid and Thibeau stopping 25 shots apiece. The
difference was that Moncton had 26 shots and Cornwall 27.

Big day for Bruins' McQuaid
Thunder Alumnist scores his first NHL goal - a Game Winner vs the Montreal Canadians
MONTREAL — Defenceman Adam McQuaid from Cornwall, P.E.I., scored his first goal as a NHLer on Sunday.
Tuukka
Rask made 36 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Boston
Bruins finally found a way to win with a 3-0 victory over the
Montreal Canadiens. McQuaid’s point shot at 17:32 of the
first period was tipped in front by the Canadiens’ Ryan White and just
caught the inside of the post to the right of Halak before going in.It also was McQuaid’s first point in 12 games with Boston.
The
23-year-old McQuaid, who was recalled from the Bruins’ AHL team in
Providence a week ago, was playing in his 12th career NHL game.
He
has played in 31 games this season for Providence and has registered
three goals and seven assists. The
six-foot-five 209-pound Islander was originally drafted by the
Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round (55 th overall) of the 2005
NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to Boston from Columbus for a 2007 fifth
round draft pick on May 16, 2007.Sunday, Marco Sturm scored twice for
the Bruins (23-23-11), who were on the verge of an 11-game winless
streak.Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves for the Canadiens (28-26-6), who
saw their modest three-game win streak come to an end.Halak
had no chance on any of the three goals he allowed, with two being
tipped past him by teammates and the third coming off a blocked shot in
front.
It was the sixth time this season the Canadiens have been shut out, but only the second time with Halak in goal.
For
the Bruins, their three goals snapped a string of nine straight games
where they scored two or fewer, scoring only 11 goals total over that
span. It was their longest such stretch since 1964.
The
Canadiens began the first by taking the play to the Bruins but fell
into a familiar pattern by the second half of the period, allowing
Boston to control the play and eventually grab a 2-0 lead with two late
goals.

Thunder moves back into the basement losing to the
Fredericton Canadians 6 to 1. A lack of attention to detail and
lackluster play led to the loss. The Thunder continues its
pattern of playing poorly after a win.
Outworked and out hustled for most of the game there were very few bright
spots, for the Thunder.
Fredericton
got their first goal just over three minutes into the game and just
kept scoring as they built a 3-0 lead at the end of the first and were
up 4-0 by the time the whistle blew after the second. In fact they had
scxored five straight goals before allowing the Thunder on the board
and answered back just over two minutes later to take the game 6-1.
Brett Barnhill had two goals, including what eventually turned out to
be the game winner and Nick Jordan had a pair, including an empty
netter as Cornwall tried a comeback with just over three minutes left
in the game.
Also scoring for Fredericton were Paul Comeau and Dylan Desmeules. Peter Trainor had a pair of assists.
Cornwall’s lone goal was scored by Stefan Lapierre with assists going to Griffin Gallant and Brandon Carter.
Winning goaltender Seamus Bowen stopped 18 of the 19 shots that came
his way. Chris Gallant was kept busy for the Thunder, stopping 31 of 37
shots for the loss.
