CORNWALL,
PEI - March 6, 2010 - The Charlottetown Islanders are the provincial
champs having swept the series in four straight games. The final game
was Saturday night at the APM Centre in Cornwall where they defeated
the Cornwall Thunder 4-2.
Both teams played
through a scoreless first periiod before the Islanders got two goals in
the second while holding the Thunder scoreless.
In the third the home team tried to come back twice scoring an early
goal to get within one, only to have the Islanders go back up by two.
Then as time wound down Cornwall scored to make it within one, once
again, only to have their visitors score an empty netter and spoil any
hope of a victory.
Craig MacLauchlan got the first goal for Charlottetown just over
five minutes into the second and J.C Dawson scored on the power play
his first of two as the period drew to a close. Max MacDonald drew an
assist on the first while Cody Coffin and Jeremy Balderston picked up
assists on the second.
Then it was Cornwall’s turn as Devan Gunn from Jonathan Richards and
Brandon Carter scored just over seven minutes into the third. However
just three minutes later Craig Dougan got the Islanders back up by two
on an unassisted effort.
Cornwall again fought back and eight minutes later Josh Bowman from
Stefan Lapierre got the Thunder back in the game. However the Islanders
weren’t going to allow any more scored and when Cornwall pulled their
goalie in an effort to tie the game, Dawson got his second of the night
from Jordan McInnis and MacLauchlan to give the Islanders their two
goal difference.
Stephen Miller took the win for the Islanders making 29 saves. Dylan McQuaid was tagged with the loss with 25 saves
